Unexpected decisions

It’s been a hectic week of soul-searching and planning. It’s been getting more and more obvious that something big is in the works…

I’m packing up and taking it to Asia!

I’m planning a six month sabbatical: Hong Kong in March, Thailand in April, and then Southern China from May through September. I’m finally doing what I’ve always dreamed of doing, traveling as an independent spirit and finding what else the world has to offer!

Hong Kong: reunion with friends from all over the world, intensive Mandarin course
Thailand: Scuba diving, underwater photography, Muay Thai boxing course
Southern China: Mandarin, travel photography, culture, history, food, possible book project?

In the meantime, M will be in Thailand teaching English, doing a Muay Thai course and learning to Scuba dive. After 7 years of living together, this separation should be interesting!

To top it all off at the end of the trip, instead of heading back to LA, I think we’ll move back to Hong Kong for awhile. See what happens. We’ve been frantically trying to figure out how to tell his parents. And my parents, being frustratingly Chinese, have told me to ‘take my time’ to think it over. I’ve decided that thinking too long about any one thing before making a decision is a) a huge waste of energy and time, and b) definitely bad for your health. Nike said it best – Just do it.

  1. Impressive plan. Can’t wait to read your tales and hopefully enjoy some photographs.
