iPod Touch Software Upgrade

Apple – iPod touchApple released new software for the iPod Touch: Mail, Maps, Web Clips, Customizable Home Screen, Stocks, Notes, Weather, and Movies and Music – all for $19.95, that is if you bought the iPod Touch before today. It seems as though new buyers of the iPod Touch will get this software upgrade for free. Is that really fair? Especially when the iPod was only release at the end of Sept, a mere 4 months ago.

Apple, what is going on with you? First you drop the price of iPhones, now you are selectively charging for software. You gave old iPhone users credit for the price drop, so don’t you think older iPod Touch users should get this software included, just like new buyers will? Besides, how different was it to come up with these programs from the iPhone versions?

You are making me want to jailbreak… Don’t make me do it…

* UPDATE *
I just finished watching the Macworld 2008 keynote address, and now I am REALLY PISSED about iPod Touch early adopters being the ONLY ones who are penalized to pay for their software upgrade. iPhone users get a software upgrade for free. New iPod Touch get the software upgrade out of the box. AppleTV users get an upgrade for free. So why are you charging iPod early adopters this measly $19.95? I bought my Touch right before the Christmas sale, at full price, straight from an Apple store. I think I should get this software upgrade for free.

OR, don’t ship any of the new iPod Touches with all the software. I still think it’s cheap on Apple’s part, but if it is just an optional software package that no one else is getting for free, I would pay for it.

  3. Personally speaking, I am outraged that Apple is charging early buyers of the iPod Touch $20 for a system update that ought to be free.

    While I understand Apple’s decision to charge money for the new applications the new $20 “application pack” also includes a SYSTEM UPDATE in the form of the home page editing, web clips, and lyrics features. All of these are updates to the currently existing iPod Touch software and NOT new applications, which means that they ought to be free to all users of the iPod Touch.

    Adding insult to injury these applications are all hidden in the 1.1.3 system update, a whopping 104.4mb file that all users must download if they want to fix bugs in the system. These applications can only be used when you pay Apple $20 to “unlock” them, but even if you decide not to buy them they stay on your iPod taking up precious space that could be used for songs, videos, or photos.

    Apple is normally wonderful when it comes to providing system support and updates, but having them shaft early adopters and loyal fans like this is offensive and shows that Apple has absolutely no regard for the iPod Touch community.
